The English and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
