The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
