Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
